01 / Capture the existing equipment
For replacements, collect a clear nameplate photograph and the machine drawings. Transcribe values exactly, including units and connection information. If a marking is illegible, identify the gap instead of estimating it.
- Rated output, voltage, current, frequency and speed.
- Frame, mounting, duty and enclosure designations.
- Manufacturer, model and serial information.
- Insulation, temperature and efficiency markings where present.
02 / Describe how the machine operates
Record what the motor drives, the operating cycle and the starting arrangement. Include the expected starts, acceleration, reversing or braking requirements. Note the range of ambient conditions and exposure to dust, water or corrosion.
A drive application also needs the minimum and maximum operating speeds and the load at those speeds. Cooling and compatibility should be confirmed for the full operating range.
03 / Verify the physical interface
| Interface | Record or photograph |
|---|---|
| Mounting | Foot / flange arrangement, fixing centres and available space. |
| Shaft & coupling | Shaft dimensions, key, coupling type and driven-equipment drawing. |
| Connection | Terminal box location, cable entry, earthing and auxiliary connections. |
| Service access | Clearances needed to install, align, inspect and maintain the assembly. |
04 / Review the proposed substitute
Compare the proposed motor against the original requirement line by line. Record any difference in dimensions, speed, starting behaviour, operating duty or accessories and obtain acceptance before ordering.
